Leveling the Playing Field
Youth sports are woven into the fabric of our society, with an estimated seven out of ten 8-14 years olds engaged in at least one sport throughout the year. That's nearly 70% of the families with children between ages 8-14, busy trekking between various activities, such as soccer games, karate practice and gymnastics.
However, it is also estimated that nearly 70% of these young athletes will either quit or be cut by the age of 14. This dramatic drop, coupled with other alarming issues such as epidemic levels of adult and childhood obesity rates, parental sideline misconduct, lack of school funding and sports-related injuries, have created some alarming trends that are pushing these issues to the forefront and demanding focus and attention from all levels of our community.
TUCSON SPORT'S primary goal is to address these types of issues and deliver high-quality information to our active and athletic families through a commitment towards embracing family, engaging in sport, and celebrating life. Tucson Sport's mission is to be Southern Arizona's premier information resource for the latest, up-to-date issues and trends that surround every aspect of youth sports, healthy family lifestyles, and overall athletic and wellness development.
TUCSON SPORT Magazine debuts in February 2006. It is Tucson 's only full-color, high-quality publication that is aimed directly at Southern Arizona 's sporting families. TUCSON SPORT is a monthly publication, with initial circulation targeted at 15,000 copies, building to a targeted print circulation of 30,000 issues per month. During our launch year, TUCSON SPORT will be offered as a free publication with a targeted distribution to over 300 sites, with an emphasis on youth sports organizations, athletic retail outlets, parks, recreational, fitness and golf facilities, plus any where else our busy active families can be found, such as doctors' offices, dentists' offices, karate studios, dance and gymnastics studios, etc. Annual subscriptions will also be made available via the website at www.tucsonsport.net .

Alarming Trends
-
Nearly 70% of young athletes will quit or be cut from their sport by the age of 14, forcing a majority of our children into inactivity and sedentary lifestyles
- Obesity in our country is at epidemic levels and rising. Nearly 1 in 4 adults and nearly 1 in 5 children are considered obese
- Our children are on track to be the first generation of Americans with a shorter projected life span than their parents
- 3 million children suffer sports-related injuries annually, 25% of which require emergency room visits. Increased competition, lack of trained coaches, and uninformed parents are the leading cause of this increase
- Poor eating choices and sedentary lifestyles are the two main factors for the increase in diabetes, cancer, and heart disease
- Growing socioeconomic gap on and off the field
- Decreased funding in our schools
- Lack of available resources to tackle these issues

Tucson Sport - Vision and Mission

Mission - To be Southern Arizona 's premier information provider for the latest, up-to-date issues and trends that surround every aspect of youth sports, healthy family lifestyles, and overall athletic and wellness development.
